Artifacts and files

Two kinds of things go in and out of a chat:

  • Files: uploads you attach and files Nexus creates, such as a spreadsheet or a report.
  • Artifacts: documents, presentations, designs, diagrams and code that Nexus writes for you. They are editable and keep a version history.

Attach files to a chat

  1. Add the file

Drag a file onto the message box or the context panel, click + → Attach file, or click + Upload in the Files section of the context panel. You can also paste an image with Ctrl+V.

  2. Check the chip

A chip appears above the message box. Click ✕ (Remove (name)) on a chip to drop it before sending.

  3. Send

Send your message. Nexus can read what you attached. You can send files without text.

Limits and failures: 50 MB per file and 5 GB per user. If any upload fails, the message is not sent. Your text and files stay put so you can retry.

Add text instead of a file. In the Files section click + Text. A dialog Add text to this chat saves what you paste as a .txt file.

Manage files in the context panel

The Files section lists Artifacts, Uploaded and Generated items. Empty text reads "No files attached. Drag and drop to upload." While dragging: "Drop files to attach to this chat."

  • Preview opens a window with Download and Close (Esc).
  • Move to project KB adds a file to the project's knowledge base, and the row then reads "in project KB". See Projects.
  • Generated files created by Nexus list here with Download and a bookmark Save to KB (project chats). It shows "Saved to KB" or "Save failed — retry?".
  • Uploading needs owner or editor access. Viewers see the files read-only.

Artifacts made by Nexus

Ask Nexus for a document, deck, diagram or design and it appears as a card in the thread titled with its kind and version, for example "Document · version 2".

  1. Open it

Click the card or its row under Files → Artifacts. The chat moves left and the artifact opens on the right.

  2. Resize or expand

Drag the divider, or focus it and use the arrow keys (Home and End jump to the smallest and largest). Click Expand to open the full artifact page, or Close to return. On a narrow screen it fills the page, with a back arrow.

  3. Ask for changes

Keep chatting. While an artifact is attached, edit requests in this chat apply to it, and a new version is created ("revised to version 3").

  4. Export

Use the download icon on its row, or the Export options in its title menu.

Attach an existing artifact. Click + → Attach artifact, search "Find an artifact…", and pick one. A chip says "edit requests in this chat apply to this artifact". Click Remove attached artifact to detach it. If a list fails to load you see "Couldn't load artifacts."; with no matches, "No artifacts match."

Title menu actions depend on your role:

RoleCan
OwnerShare, Rename, Copy to project, Duplicate, Version history, Pin, Refresh, Move to Trash, Export, Copy as Markdown (documents), Comments
EditorRename, Copy to project, Duplicate, Version history, Pin, Export. Not Share or Trash
ViewerDuplicate, Version history, Pin, Export

Pinning is a personal bookmark. Your pinned artifacts appear under Pinned in the left rail.

The Artifacts & Files page

Click Artifacts & Files in the sidebar or the left rail (/nexus/artifacts). It has two tabs.

TabWhat you can do
ArtifactsSearch ("Search artifacts…"), filter by type, project and owner, use saved views, bulk actions, and open Trash. Deleted artifacts stay in Trash for 30 days. Ask Nexus about this opens a new chat with the artifact attached
FilesSearch ("Search files…"), filter by Any chat and Any project, Delete, or Convert to artifact

Empty states: "No artifacts yet — Make one here, or ask chat for a document, deck or diagram." and "No files yet. Files you upload to a chat, or that chat makes for you, show up here."

If an artifact cannot be opened from a link, a toast says "Artifact not found — It may have been deleted, or it isn't shared with you."

Permissions

  • Deleting a chat file: the person who uploaded it, or the chat owner.
  • Attaching an artifact needs permission to read it.
  • Artifacts have their own owner, editor and viewer roles.
  • Saving an artifact needs the artifacts permission. Without it a pane can say "Not saved — you don't have access to artifacts".
